For the Love of the Sea

A love for the sea and aspirations to serve – these are just some of the reasons that motivated our newest batch of scholars to join the Navy Family and protect maritime Singapore.

Here's presenting the Defence Scholars from the Navy, who received their awards in decentralised ceremonies.

"Singapore's maritime landscape, be it in terms of opportunities and challenges it faces, is an area that's very exciting and is something that I want to be a part of. I decided to join the Navy so that I can play my part in shaping Singapore's future." – MID Shawn Cheng, SAF Scholar (right).

"I was drawn by the fact that the Navy does a lot of real-life, real-time operations to help patrol our sea lines of communication." – LTA Yeo Tsing Ngia, SAF Merit Scholar (right).

Today LTA Yeo is part of the 24/7 operations as a Young Officer on board RSS Justice, a littoral mission vessel, charged to keep a closed watch over Singapore's waters.

"I have always been interested in pursuing a career and serving in the public sector. I was inspired to become a naval officer following a sailing on a littoral mission vessel during an RSN experiential programme, where I saw first-hand how the crew worked together as a family to protect Singapore's waters against potential threats." – LTA Shawn Goh, SAF Merit Scholar (right).

"I joined the Navy because I've always had an affinity to water. Singapore is a maritime nation and is extremely vulnerable to external threats from the water. The actions our navy takes to protect Singapore also has an economic dimension. Our economic success is dependent on our reputation as a safe nation that MNCs can confidently do business with." – MID Phoebe Teo, SAF Merit Scholar (right).

"It wasn't the scholarship that was primary in my mind when I signed with the Navy. But my commanders and instructors encouraged me to try for the scholarship.
