What intrigued you about a career in the Navy?

I am a sporty person and in particular, I love doing sea sports. Therefore, I could not imagine myself doing a desk-bound job. At the same time, I was eager to find a job that was meaningful and so I took the plunge and joined the Navy.

Share with us what you do as a Senior Marine Engineer on board RSS Endurance.

I take care of all the propulsion systems, air conditioning, generators, lights and sanitary systems of the ship, ensuring their functionality as well as the safety of the ship and crew. But I do not do this alone. I am in charge of a team of 25 engineers, who work alongside me in taking care of the many systems and engines on board. The landing ship tank is the largest ship in the Navy, and it is only with teamwork that we can ensure that our ship is always operationally ready.

What makes a career as an Engineer in the Navy unique?

Life as an engineer in the Navy is really different. I get to sail with the ship for overseas missions and exercises, widening my horizon of thoughts tremendously. And I get to do this with my Navy family.

What keeps you motivated in the Navy?

My motivation comes from the friends, mentors and superiors I have in the Navy. Similar to any other job, challenges and difficulties at work are inevitable. However, my friends from the Navy never fail to lend me a helping hand whenever I need one. They are a constant motivation and inspiration to me.

How tough is it for a woman to be in the Navy?

I think it is important to note that besides disparity in physical strength, men and women can be equally capable. It may take some time to convince others of my capabilities at work, but I think this is the same in any work environment.

What advice would you give to anyone who is considering joining the Navy?

My advice would be to take in as much advice from people in the Navy as possible. Joining the Navy is a commitment you take to defend Singapore and your loved ones. Therefore, do not be afraid to ask questions and seek clarity because it is an important decision to make.
