Why did you choose to join the RSN?

I learnt about the Joint Polytechnic SAF Diploma Scheme (now renamed to SAF Polytechnic Sponsorship) while pursuing a Diploma in Marine Engineering at Singapore Polytechnic. I was attracted to the benefits offered under the sponsorship as they allowed me to not only pursue my preferred course of study, but also to achieve financial independence. Eventually, I chose to join the RSN as a Marine Systems Specialist (now known as Marine Systems Expert).

What are your current roles and responsibilities?

As the Marine Systems Expert in Eighth Flotilla Headquarters, I have to ensure the readiness of the platform systems as well as uphold the competencies of the Marine Systems Experts on board our Missile Corvette Vessels (MCVs). Part of my day-to-day responsibilities include training the junior Marine Systems Experts, conducting engineering inspections for the MCVs and reviewing the work processes of the engineering department.

Were you awarded with any sponsorship since joining the RSN? How did the sponsorship help you grow?

I was awarded the Military Domain Expert Scheme Study Award to pursue a part-time degree in Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

During my studies, I was exposed to various engineering modules and state-of-the-art technologies, which allowed me to hone my technical competencies and my problem-solving skills. We were constantly pushed to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to problems. Besides that, I had the opportunity to interact and learn from my course mates, who were from all walks of life. Through this exposure, I was able to learn from different people to overcome my shortcomings. It also developed my leadership abilities which has enabled me to unite the men and women under my charge, and leverage on their strengths to achieve mission success.

How has the RSN helped to shape who you are today?

I started my journey in the RSN as a Marine Systems Specialist and have advanced to take on appointments such as Marine Systems Cluster Chief, Marine Engineer and the Flotilla's Marine Systems Expert. Looking back on my journey, I can say that the RSN has shaped me to become a self-motivated person who readily takes on challenges both in and out of work.

What advice would you give to anyone who is considering a career with the RSN?

Being in the RSN may be tough and challenging, but as long as you stay focused and committed to learn, you will be able to overcome all difficulties.
